Missional is a term used often and in varied ways among church leaders and pastors today. What does it mean to be a Missional Church? THE HEART OF THE CHURCH'S MISSIONAL CHARACTER Conference is specifically designed to address the terms we use and the deeper questions involved in what it means to be a missional church today. What is at stake in calling ourselves "missional"? What are the implications?
The conference design is intentionally interactive with case studies, biblical reflectiontime, small group work, worship and a panel of invited guest. The four Plenary Sessions will be:
- Missional is..."a communal identity".
- Missional is..."a public presence".
- Missional is..."a confident witness".
- Missional is..."a local discernment".

Presenting Speaker
Dr. George R. Husberger is an influential voice in the missional church movement. His writing contributions include co-authorship of The Missional Church: A Vision for the Sending of the Church in North America and Treasure in Clay Jars: Patterns of Missional Faithfulness. His solo book, Bearing the Witness of the Spirit: Lesslie Newbigin's Theology of Cultural Plurality is part of The Gospel And Our Culture series book which foster the missional encournter of the gospel with North American culture. Dr. Hunsberger is the coordinator of the Gospel And Our Culture Network (GOCN). At Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan he is the Professor of Congregational Mission, the Dean of Journey, the center for the church's learning, and director of Western's Doctor of Ministry Program.
Evening Dialogue Presenter
Darrell Guder will join us on Thursday evening. He is Princeton Theological Seminary’s Dean of Academic Affairs and the Henry Winters Luce Professor of Missional and Ecumenical Theology. Darrell’s writing and teaching focus on the theology of the missional church, especially the theological implications of the paradigm shift to post-Christendom as the context for Christian mission in the West.
Conference Details
LOCATION: The Missional Church Conference The Heart of the Church's Missional Character will take place Thursday, October 16 and Friday, October 17, 2008 at Rutgers University Inn and Conference Center.
COST: The cost of the conference is $175. You will receive a pre-reader and missional workbook. A full schedule with times and meals will be online shortly.
LODGING: Rooms are available at Rutgers University Inn and Conference Center for Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The rooming cost is $84 for double occupancy, $97 for single occupancy. Buffet breakfast is incuded. Guest should call (732)932-9144 ext. 1 to make reservation. Mention the group name MISSIONAL CHURCH CONFERENCE when making reservation in order to be extended the special group discount. Rooms reservation deadline is September 15th.
